Fish for Four

Wolfgang Kohlhaase, Rita Zimmerová

About Play

This black comedy about an old servant working in the household of three unmarried sisters is, in its own way, a forgotten theatrical gem. After the death of their parents, Caroline took over the entire responsibility for her younger sisters as well as the family brewery. Who would blame her for being somewhat bossy and strict? Cecilia, the middle sister, does not have to care about anything – she loves good food and looks after her appearance excessively.  And the last, the baby girl Clementine, has heard again and again all her life: “You´re the youngest, you have to, you mustn’t …”.

And the servant Rudolf? He has been helping the sisters for long years, and not only in their household, and he has also gradually become their lover. He performs every service without grumbling and fully of his own accord with a view to the promised generous financial reward which will fall into his lap after their deaths. Only, what will happen if he is the first one to be taken by the Grim Reaper?

A significant character of German cinematography, the director and playwright Wolfgang Kohlhaase is, together with the actress Rita Zimmerová, the author of the book Fish for Four, which later gained a stage version and appeared on the Czech stage for the first time in 1971. It achieved wide audience recognition through a film adaptation from 1987 by Pavlína Moskalyková, which featured Rudolf Hrušínský, Jiřina Bohdalová, Květa Fialová, and Blanka Bohdanová.

This historically first Olomouc presentation of Fish for Four is a present for Ivana Plíhalová, who in 2022 will celebrate an important jubilee and also her 40th season on the stage of the Moravian Theatre. Together with Ivana, her colleagues Václav Bahník and Naděžda Chroboková-Tomicová will also celebrate 40 years in Olomouc. The quarter of celebrants will be completed by Vlasta Hartlová, who, in 2022, will celebrate her 30th season on the Olomouc stage. All this will happen under the direction of the Head of the Olomouc drama department, Roman Vencl.
